I believe they may 'farm' votes to get ahead for personal gain. I believe making becoming staff a competition and one that can be won without legitimately helping others through a poll isn't fair or smart.

That is a valid point, yes, but there's also filters on most forums. If someone votes more than once on an IP, you can set it to disregard their vote. If that fails, the poll could be comment-based, and I'm 100% certain that Shadow has a convient IP beside the commenter's post, so farming can be easily avoided.

Also, it's not much of a competition. If you've honestly done your best to help people, they'll vote for you. If you're suddenly nice and helpful when a poll starts up, then members will know to stray from your name.
