On a few servers that I've moderated in the past, we found it key that the Moderators were chosen by the way they've helped the players, and not the way the staff see them help, because everyone gets more helpful and friendly when Shadow, Meat or WoM are around.

Every once in a while, I suggest you pick a few helpful players and do a poll to the server on who they think should be the newest staff member. This way, the current staff get to pick the people they think influence the players in a positive way and, out of those choices, the players get to pick the one that they know influence the game in a positive way.

Just a suggestion though, plus it would stop the random people hoping to join the server and post a mod application thinking they'll be chosen. (:

I completely support this, I enjoy pretending to be afk and watching how others react when i am not there, people do change when staff are around quite a lot!

maybe do a general population survey every month or every week or so just to see who has been helpful, maybe ask people to "Enter" then put everyone down on a poll and see who gets the most votes, don't have to necessarily give them moderator, maybe make a new title that doesn't have any powers called "Helper" and they get that yell title?

As much as this is a good idea I believe people may abuse the trust you place in them to be fair and honest and to only vote once, rather i believe they may 'farm' votes to get ahead for personal gain. I believe making becoming staff a competition and one that can be won without legitimately helping others through a poll isn't fair or smart. I also don't believe that for the ability to 'farm' they should be rewarded with any kind of title at all, staff, helper or other.. just my opinion.

That is a valid point, yes, but there's also filters on most forums. If someone votes more than once on an IP, you can set it to disregard their vote. If that fails, the poll could be comment-based, and I'm 100% certain that Shadow has a convient IP beside the commenter's post, so farming can be easily avoided.

Also, it's not much of a competition. If you've honestly done your best to help people, they'll vote for you. If you're suddenly nice and helpful when a poll starts up, then members will know to stray from your name.

Mhmm, i agree with titan actually, it would be kinda hard, you get the people who help one person once and say "Can you vote for me to be mod?" and because they are new and know no better, they will do!

I think maybe if shadow used a ::hide command, and simple watched people in game @ home, it could prove more useful that a simple poll that people may or may not vote in

The other issue in a vote would be that some may NOT vote, and a person that deserves it may not get it because of the people they helped's laziness.
